I believe that is a singletree or some people call them swingletree. A bar in front of a wagon and behind the horse. It helps balance the load

For hooking horse to a variety of things ie: plow , cart , wagon , backboard, covered wagon etc. Etc. Etc..... Different size/strengths for different load applications ... Just watch any old movie such as Westward the Women , Stagecoach ( orig with John Wayne ).....also River of No Return , Robert Mitchum plowing with single horse & shows him unhooking that spreader & hanging on horse collar to turn horse & plow around . You get a real good & close look at it ..... You're Welcome Marshall...π

Single tree. Goes between the horse and wagon to help balance the load. Not the same as a yoke.

It is called a yoke... it was used in harnessing a pair of oxen or other kind of draft animals for pulling plows or carts etc...
