Yikes. Take an interesting concept, a classically familiar sci fi setting, and a great leading actor and you should have a solid movie that is both entertaining and thoughtful. This is not that. Mickey 17 is a sci fi comedy and political allegory and it does not succeed at any of those things. It fails to be funny more than a handful of times, it drops the ball during its long runtime and doesn’t make any statement or ask any questions that arise from the cool concept that they sort of abandon about 1/2 way through, and although there will definitely be people who like the dated and corny political commentary, it’s been done. To death. The premise is original and the rest is garbage we have seen before, done worse. It feels like a ripoff of Wes Anderson, who I can’t stand. It feels like Avenue 5, which I loved, but the movie never gets anywhere near as funny as that great show. Mickey 17 was kind of a waste of time and a waste of a movie ticket for a guy who goes to the movies like once or twice a month. Weak 3/10 Watch Avenue 5 or Galaxy quest. Edit: Pattinson does a great job carrying this movie, full credit and applause to his performance(s) (see Good Time:)
