The Met Office is currently looking for people to suggest up to 5 names for storms...
It would be great if thousands all suggested the same 5 names (in alphabetical order as that's how storm names appear):
BigOil, BP, Equinor, Exxon, Shell.

Met Office page is: www.metoffice.gov.uk/forms/name-our-storms-call-fo…

Whilst the Met Office is unlikely to adopt any of the above 5 names, if they are suggested in huge numbers it may attract media coverage, as was the case with Boaty McBoatface but with more serious intent. This would be enough to make the point to the government and the wider British public, might even get some overseas attention.

@PhantasmalBlast

I mean I think it’s only fair that these companies get the recognition they deserve for all the generous support they’ve given to storms droughts and floods and wildfires all around the world!

Simon, you inspired me to become a Sustainability scientist and I recently achieved my bachelor's degree. This is by far my favorite message to have ever attached my credentials to: "Dear Met Office, Frankly, this is a call for credit where credit is due. No one loves a good natural disaster, made even more frequent and disastrous, than the industries who have been researching the effects of oil and gas on the planet for decades! These industry titans must LOVE big storms, right? Why else would they spend so much time and money to research and perpetuate the climate-altering effects of oil and gas? They're the MVPs behind a broken record of record breaking storms, heatwaves and hurricanes; many climate scientists agree that these unsung oil and gas heroes have been tirelessly, selflessly, and NAMELESSLY, geoengineering this planet to reach that goal! So please, let's do the right thing as a scientific community and give them credit for it already! Sincerely, Lindy [redacted] ASU College of Global Futures School of Sustainability"

Excellent work Simon. I live in New Orleans, a place under a constant weather threat. I really appreciate you work. Thank you.

@JarnaSand

As they take pride in putting their name on educational buildings, cultural pieces and sports, why not the weather aswell.

Done 👍 What a comical but quite smart idea. I remember I once contacted Sega about them supporting real hedgehog conservation to give them good publicity for their Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to their support staff, and I never got even a textbook reply back lol

@ChristopherDraws

Fantastic idea, and done! My reasoning was a sarcastic comment about it being a wonderful way to pay tribute to fossil fuel companies and their valiant efforts to prioritise profits over the future of the planet, leading to more extreme weather events.

Done! Thanks Simon for the initiative. It might be small and symbolic but I do feel better after submitting the form, somehow.

You'd think they would disallow non British citizens from submitting lol

Great idea. I did so from Canada. We’re still part of the Commonwealth so hope our votes count too! We could add Suncor, Syncrude, and more…

@paulnamesa

Great storms should be named after their creators after all.

Done! And for the ‘reason for my chosen names’: “The oil and gas industry is directly responsible for rampant climate change and the resulting severe weather events.”

@helendunn9905

Great idea. My submissions were from top 5 oil companies according to google; Saudi Aramco, PetroChina, ExxonMobile, Chevron and Shell. But we have all played a part by using petroleum products such as plastic, (including clothing), vasoline, using transport fueled by diesel, petrol etc, using electricity from coal fired power stations. Rather than feel bad about this let's turn our attention toward solutions and supporting green energy wherever and whenever we can. Humanity created the problem and we have the power to solve it. I believe in us. ❤❤❤
