Are there any insurance ’gotchas’ when buying a panel van and doing your own conversion? Is it easy to get insurance? Please expand on any cargo to camper considerations.

We converted a van to a camper a couple of years ago. Sent off all the documentation for re-registering as a motor caravan with dvla only to have it sent back 12 weeks later saying the rules had changed whilst our application was in and returned our logbook as van with side windows. The only thing that ours fell foul of was the 'at least 2 windows in one side of the van' part....so we fitted more windows and sent off again....once again a big fat NO!. No explanation other than they didn't think the permanent external features resembled a motor caravan!!!....its got multiplr new windows, camper van graphics, awning rails and everything else they require ....IT LOOKS LIKE A CAMPER!!. So what I was wondering was are you going for full motor caravan registration and if so what are you going to do to make the external features resemble such....
