The value proposition of used DSLR gear right now is absolutely insane. What would you buy now?

@samuel_andreyev

Interesting question. I use a 1DS mark III for almost everything now. The reasons are: 100% viewfinder coverage; the size and brightness of the viewfinder; the ergonomics; the reliability; the battery life; 14-bit colour; enough resolution for A2 prints (I do a lot of printing); colours as good as the 5D mark I or II; and vastly better autofocus than the 5D bodies. All of this, except possibly the autofocus, is critical for the urban architecture shooting I do most of the time. When you get into more modern DSLRs, in my opionion, the colours start to stray from what I really like about these older cameras, and at that point you might as well just get a mirrorless body. The only downside is it's 500 grams heavier than a 5D, and bulkier, but with a decent bag it's not such a big deal. And price wise, they are just about free.

I'd add that also new DSLRs are very inexpensive - the K-1II is excellent value for money I'd say

I think where price meets professional quality you can't look much further than a Canon 5D mk3. It's a £500 camera and it's just about the pinnacle of pro DSLR function. I realise that the 5D and the 5D mk2 are classics, but the 5D mk3 is a proper modern Pro Tool for entry-level money. The mk4 didn't bring enough extra to the party and its price starts me looking at the R-series instead. I have a 5D, a 6D and a 5DSR. The 5D is beautiful but with way too many limitations to recommend as a Pro tool. It's just lovely to use as a hobbyist. The 6D is actually my favourite to use, it's lovely to hold and it very underrated, but lacks the Pro body features. The 5DSR is a great camera but I'd be happy with the resolution of the mk3. So, for a bargain-bucket, tank of a Pro camera body, that will probably last a lifetime, and take on any assignment .... 5D mk3.

In the past 2 years I bought a 5D and a 10D. Half a year ago I was gifted a nearly new 5D mark III. I love all of them, and use them exclusively for photos while I also have an M50 mark II. Surprisingly the camera I use most is the 10D!!!! It slows me down the most, enjoy that the most. The mark III is a super-modern beast in comparison, and I love that as well, just as much as the 5D classic. All three have very distinct picture styles, and I found all three to be super useful. The mark III cured me of desiring a new mirrorless, as it has superb low light capability and lightning fast and precise focus. (I know mirrorless is even faster, but it's also a joykill as you just point-and-shoot, there's no control over artistic expression, camera calls the shots.) For something versatile, I'd recommend the mark III (or buy one more), and for hard core photography for deep expression the 10D. I had the 20D for many years and now I'm enjoying the 10D even more. For value, the 10D is absolute king / steal. Mine was 28$!

I have a stable full of 5D series camera. Classics, Mkiis, Mkiiis. Enough to keep me shooting for years.

Just bought a 5D3, 6 years after selling my last one. Tempted to get a 5D2 as I’ve never tried one out and they’re currently crazy cheap.

Good question! My first choice would be a 6D Mk1, which I already own. Right now the 5D Mk3 is crazy cheap and offers a better focusing system than the 6D and better weather sealing. Surely a fantastic buy!  5D mk4 is excellent but still relatively expensive... 5DS or DSR is an interesting prospect if you value Gigapixels for your photography...great on a tripod for product photography but without in body IS seems a "courageous" prospect for general photography. You could reduce resolution from around 50MP to roughly 30MP by shooting MRAW for handheld, but then what's the point of getting the camera in the first place?

If you have a 5D classic or mark ii, a mark iv would be an amazing leap forward. But if you have a mark iii I wouldn’t bother.

I already bought a 6D. Probably a 5Dii or a 1DX I

I love my trusty Nikon D610: it clearly sat on someone's shelf for a few years. The 1.8 and 1.4 Nikon primes are terrific value: my main reason for buying. If you can find a Canon 5D mark 3 in excellent condition with a low shutter count, that's an even better choice but I found it hard to find one that hadn't been thrashed. And I have always been a Nikon girl.

Either Canon 6D mark II or 5D mark 4 to go with the current 5D classic and 6D mark 1.

Not DSLRs but observation, especially given that Canon allowed Sigma for RF-S: the price of used Canon R7 is incredibly low compared to new from a year ago. I also like the Canon M6 mark ii with Sigma F1.4 EF-M lenses, Canon's EF-M 15-45mm kit lens, Canon's EF-S 18-135mm and Tamron 70-300 VC DI USD. The Sony A7iii's price has also dipped recently!

I am mostly set on DSLRs, and am focusing on lenses. I have D850, Df, and some vintage (D200, Fuji S2 and S3). I would like a D4S, as I really love the D4 sensor in the Df. Right now I’m focusing on finding all the great condition glass being dumped for mirrorless. I really like AF-D glass and it’s super cheap as it doesn’t focus with the FTZ adapter. I already have most of the D and G glass I want, and im rounding out my Manual Focus line with Nikkor’s and Zeiss. I have shot mirrorless off and on for at least a decade, but really don’t like EVFs. The current state of used gear pricing made it easy to dump mirrorless and get a dream lineup of D/SLR bodies and glass :)

I just picked up a D850 a couple weeks ago, it is brilliant! I also want to add to my Canon system, either a 1DX II/III or a 5D4

I own mirrorless Olympus and Canon gear. I recently bought a used Canon 6d with 50mm 1.4 lens for $250. SINCE I bought the 6d I’ve also I bought EF 24-70 2.8, Canon 135mm f2, EF Sigma 35 1.4 and I haven’t been this happy taking pictures since I first started. I think I’m going to the 6D Mark II since I feel the 6d’s autofocus system is its biggest flaw. The 6D is my first dslr ever, and I really enjoy the mirror slap.

Just scored a low shutter count 5Dmkii from a neighbour for £100. His was a classic case of rushing headlong into photography and buying a ton of kit then losing interest and putting it in the loft. I’ve hit a small goldmine of old kit. He’s told me to come back and see what else he has as & when I get some cash together. Some self control needed as I want to remain nimble, not a weightlifter-photographer.

I bought a d600 and a 5d classic. I equate them to classic cars. Less convenience factor but a strong feeling of nostalgia and a uniquely fun experience to use. Also unique results I can’t get with an a7iii.

No more SLR for me. They are loud, bulky and focussing precission is questionable. Need no SLR, when I can have a small and rather affordable mirrorless system like micro 4/3s.
