The šTurkicš Origins of the Proto-Bulgariansš§š¬ Although modern Bulgaria is known as a Slavic nation, the name of the country and its earliest founders ā the Proto-Bulgarians ā were originally of šTurkicš origin. In the 6thā7th centuries, these tribes lived in the Eurasian steppes, carried the traditions of Turkic nomadic peoples, and later migrated to the Danube region, where they established the first Bulgarian state. Several key facts confirm the Turkic origins of the Proto-Bulgarians. First, many of their titles and terms are purely Turkic. Words such as bagatur, tarkan, and boila were common among the Turkic peoples of that era. Even the rulerās title kanasubigi corresponds to the Turkic form qan sü begi. Second, Byzantine historians often referred to the Proto-Bulgarians as āTurksā or ādescendants of the Huns.ā In that time, these labels were commonly used to describe nomadic Turkic groups of the steppes. Archaeological findings also support the Proto-Bulgariansā connection to Turkic steppe culture. Their burial practices, including the placement of horse remains, the nomadic-style weapons, and their tamga symbols closely resemble those of the Gƶktürks and other Turkic tribes. Anthropological studies further show that part of the Proto-Bulgar population belonged to the Turkic steppe anthropological
