The Lore Lodge

Hey guys! We ran a poll a couple of months ago which showed that a lot of you weren’t seeing our videos in your feed, and we may have an answer from YouTube as to why that is. After speaking with support, they seem very focused on the notification bell - probably more than they should be, since that feature doesn’t really work as expected.

That said, it would appear that they do use it as a metric to determine which of your subscribed channels you’re most interested in watching. So, if you’re not seeing us as often as you used to/want to, try turning notifications on (despite how useless the feature actually is in practice).

Edit: to be clear, I mean the channel specific notification bell, rather than the YouTube app itself on your device.

If only they could invent some way to tell them you wish to subscribe to a particular channel, and that you want that to come up first. IDK something like a subscribe button or something...

I suspect it may be things like "watch later" may play a part too. I get all the videos from channels i put into my "day off" playlist even without the notification enabled.

I don't have the bell on for any of my subbed channels. I absolutely DETEST app notifications.

Unfortunately, YouTube doesn’t pay much attention to whether or not I want notifications and spams my phone incessantly unless I have them ALL off. Agreeing to receive notices from one or two channels apparently made those festering knobs think I also wanted spam and “You MIGHT be interested in this!” So I have notifications turned off for every channel and also in my phone control center as well. If YouTube didn’t ABUSE the feature, I’d be willing to USE the feature.

Set for all notifications now. Y'all are one of the only channels I watch regularly around the time you upload, though I will say the live shows aren't a priority like the in-depth scripted content is. Usually I'll rewatch Weird Bible or History Unhinged if that's what I'm in the mood for.

In my experience some of the channel I have notifications on for, I always get notifications for without fail. But for other’s it either never gives me a notification, or I only get them seemingly randomly.

It’s not that the feature is useless, it’s detrimental to the entire idea of notifications in the first place. If my phone makes a noise it’s because it’s trying to get my immediate attention. I have my phone finely tuned to notify me when something happens that warrants my immediate attention like a text message from a family member or a friend or a phone call. Every single other form of information delivery can wait until I can afford it the appropriate amount of time and attention to actually digest it and understand the potential impact to my day. I primarily use my phone to listen to audiobooks or podcast. Every single time there is a notification, my audio pauses, the notification sound then makes a sound, my audio is then backtracked a second or 2, and then resumes. A string of nonstop notifications can actually move my audio back by several minutes, forcing me to listen to something I just listened to or stop and fast forward to the spot I was at before the notifications. No, I will not be hitting the bell, nor will I enable notifications for YouTube. My key takeaway from this post is that I need to stop relying on the video feed, and instead prioritize my subscription feed.

I’ve heard too that if you already have your notifications on, turning them off and then on again (seriously) also helps.

I turned all YouTube notifications off about a month ago because it was annoying how often I would get video alerts. If Im watching YouTube, then I just go through my subscription feed for the day and catch up but otherwise I dont want to notified when Im busy throughout the day and my phone buzzes just to tell me theres a live stream or new video.

I hate Youtube. The only thing that works are AI generated ads.

Theyre very long, YouTube has a million options competing for attention, and you make them very, very quickly. It's impressive but no channel has their audience that much by a thread (except Mr. Ballen and That Chapter; they are rhe exception; the world stops spinning for them)

The only notification bell I know of is the one under the video, near the subscribe button. I always have it on, turned up to get all notifications. I still miss some things but then I go to your channel to find any Ive missed

@reemies

using that as a metric for which of my subscribed channels i'm most interested in when i do not use it for any of my channels and i don't actually know anyone who uses it sure is a way to gather metrics! also i call bs. i fully think channels pay them to promote them. some channels that i never watch get shoved down my throat and other channels that i constantly watch i have to seek out

@yeetsalittle

Youtube is shooting themselves in the foot by relying so much on that stupid notification bell. For a channel like this, 2 notifications a week isnt a big deal, but using it for every channel i watch is absurd. I already have enough notifications on my phone, i dont want more. Youtube needs to move away from that ridiculous metric

@GenXGamerGirl

sadly I have so many subscriptions that I don't want a notification bell. I wish you could just flag it so it appears on the feed.

I've found that even when I select all notifications for a Chanel to be turned on, after a few months I stop getting notifications. Then when I check, someone's im unsubscribed or it's no longer set for notifications. Something YouTube has had for years now.
