Last, but not least, comfortably above the character writing, beyond the bombastic battles, and the saving grace of the pacing, the themes(both topics & messages) of Dies Irae rein supreme among all other aspects of the narrative, truly being highlight of my experience
The author really took the time to layer every Ideology presented throughout the story, providing each of them with their own weight, while interweaving and contrasting them through the vehicles of various character dynamics and intense conflicts
I think what I found most appealing about the themes of Dies Irae was how it used it’s countless clichés and intertextuality’s to create a meta-narrative of sorts, exploring its various ideas regarding fate and meaning by examining then through the lens of the narrative own construction
Creating a sort of self-awareness, that not only serves to deliver it from the sense of pretentiousness that would have otherwise threatened to overtake the narrative, but also Imbues it’s various pedantic’s with a higher purpose
That probably sounds pretentious and confusing, but what I’m talking about Is quite difficult to describe in nature and would probably be better understood upon reading/playing DI
After reading The House In Fata Morgana, I doubted another Visual Novel could rival Fullmetal Deamon Muramasa thematically ever again, but boy was I wrong, because Dies Irae is a thematic masterpiece, a melting pot of different messages, topics & Ideas, which come together to create a truly compelling read
So ultimately would I recommend it… yes and no
On one hand, I find it to be absurdly amazing, on the other hand I am well aware that it’s not for everyone
This is gonna be a stranger analogy, but the best way I can describe Dies Irae, would be to compare it to American Chinese food(please bear with me)
For many the Chinese food found in the states is a bastardization of what it’s based on, a complete and utter disrespect to the culture from which its cuisine originated, finding it to be overly sweetened, disgustingly greasy and a complete and other waste of money
Yet many perceive it to be the holy Grail of fast food, a deliciously, indulgent, guilty pleasure, that not only bridges, but entirely fuses, the realms of sweet and savory. With many Chinese Americans who grew up on the “real deal” actually preferring the Americanized alternative to the classics of their upbringing
This isn’t just to say that enjoying Dies Irae is a merely a matter of taste(though certainly that it is), rather, what I’m attempting to express is that DI is utterly shameless(which is saying something considering the medium), it has no interest in subtlety and holds no qualms about what it is
For some like myself that’s the defining element of its brilliance, for others it is the very thing that keeps them from considering it a truly intellectual work
So if anything I said has piqued your interest, then I recommend you keep my Chinese food analogy in mind before investing any time In Dies Irae
Overall I’d say Dies Irae gaps Fate Stay Night & Higurashi, is rather comfort above Clannad, Is ever so slightly better than Umineko, just barely below Fullmetal Deamon Muramasa, & rank a bit below The House In Fata Morgana
I give it a 9.9 out 10(really 11, but shh 🤫), which means it shares a rating with Hellblazer, Six Feet Under & The Wire
P.S if you seen this before that’s because I copy pasted most of it from another convo
