Woodward English

🟣 WHO vs. WHOM 🟣
Use WHO as the subject of a sentence or clause.
- Who is calling?
Use WHOM as the object of a verb or preposition.
- To whom are you speaking?
- Whom did you see?
Tip: If you can replace with "he/she," use "who"; if "him/her," use "whom."

This is a traditional grammar rule BUT ... honestly, how often will you really hear people use WHOM nowadays?
In everyday conversation, everyone just uses WHO so I wouldn't stress so much about this rule.
What do you think?

Hi ad. In my experience, it depends on contexts. For instance, as far as I am concerned, many students are told to follow the rules strictly when they are taking exams, particularly those related to grammatical multiple-choice questions. However, in daily conversations, it is not necessary to do that. Instead, people tend to use the most comfortable ways to express their ideas, as long as the listeners can understand them. For me, I lean towards "who" when I communicate with others since I feel more comfortable and confident using it. When using "whom", I feel quite hesitant as I tend to force myself to use perfect grammar, leading to the fact that my language is not natural anymore and the interlocutors may get tired of listening to me. Therefore, it is not advisable to use "who" in every situation and eliminate "whom" totally; in fact, it is the context that matters. This is my own opinion. Thanks for reading.

I almost always say 'who’ but was told "to whom" and never "to who". "To whom are you speaking? Vs "Who are you speaking to?". Honestly, absolutely nobody says "to whom" in normal conversation or everyday business correspondence. "To whom should the letter be addressed?" Or "Who should I address the letter to?".
