It's wildly entitled to claim that something that has entered into a house you are renting out to someone else is now yours.

I feel like if you get hit by a 100 million year old rock that came from across the solar system you should get to keep it

Pretty sure it’s legally Ann’s. Birdie may own the property, but Ann legally has possession of it, meaning that if something’s in the apartment, it is the property of Ann

I would have allowed Birdie to claim ownership and then Ann should have sued Birdie because the meteorite hit her. It's her property, she is responsible for the damages it caused.

Let's hope that the true owners don't come here looking for it.

You don't choose the meteor, the meteor chooses you. 🤪

By everyone's argument of "if it hit you, you should keep it." Then when someone stabs or shoots or even punches you(you are getting hurt),then you own that knife or gun or that person. It makes no sense

If someone throws a bar of gold through the window it's not the house owners property

I mean, legally speaking, I'd have to guess the person who would get to own the meteor is the person whose property line had said meteor fall on it. Since the meteorite was previously without ownership, and the state (or federal) government was willing (assuming the meteorite didn't contain something very valuable the state government would want) then the person whose property was either damaged or impacted by the meteorite would get to keep it. Because, using an analogy as an example, if I get hit by a car, it doesn't mean I magically now own that car. This is, of course, including the idea that the car is owned by nobody.
