The phenomenon, often called the "Returning Soldier Effect," refers to an observed increase in the proportion of male births during and immediately after major wars. This has been documented in several countries, particularly during and after World War I and World War II, with notable evidence from the United States, where the male-to-female birth ratio peaked in 1946. Typically, the baseline sex ratio at birth is about 105 boys per 100 girls, but during these periods, it can rise to around 108 boys per 100 girls.
