The iconographer from Samara, Sergey Osipov, painted this icon as a call to repentance for the sin of abortion. He says:
“I appeal to local iconographers through the media to paint it and distribute copies of this icon, to photograph it — I am not interested in money or copyright.
Yesterday I went to the cemetery in the village of Rubezhany near Samara, where my father is buried. I was cleaning his grave and went to throw away the trash outside the cemetery, and what I saw shocked me. I have the feeling that the Lord showed me all of this so that my heart would not grow cold on this topic.
Down there are graves with plaques that read: ‘Embryo,’ ‘Fetus,’ ‘Waste.’ I returned home in shock, and my wife said: ‘At least they were "buried" near the cemetery.’
In Yekaterinburg, not long ago, there was a horrifying case: murdered infants, taken from their mothers’ wombs, were simply thrown into the forest, where they were accidentally discovered at the beginning of the summer.
Through the icon I painted, I want to call people to the Church, to strengthen their faith, and to gather the strength to fight against the greatest and most terrifying sin.”
