how do we determine what is cultural appropriation vs. appreciation and who determines that?
this is a topic that i've been wanting to explore for FOREVER. convos about cultural appropriation online often lack nuance because they're restricted by character limits & no one really wants to sit down in front of their phone and spend hours having a nuanced conversation.
on top of that, 'cultural appropriation' was a concept that was conceived in academia in the 80s/90s, and only more recently hit the mainstream within the past decade. as a result, the general public's usage of the term is often removed from its original context.
my youtube originals show TRACING THE TREND just debuted as part of Bear Witness, Take Action 3. in this episode, we explore how hip hop has influenced asian youth worldwide and what constitutes as appropriation vs appreciation with fellow black/filipino rapper guapdad 4000, the first asian woman in hip hop who managed members of wu tang sophia chang, and the first african-american editor of billboard magazine danyel smith
of course, this episode is just the tip of the ice berg as elements of asian cultures have also been appropriated in the west, even in hip hop. the conversation continues!
