All the things I Love

Travel Blog Gothenburg, Sweden 8/3/2024

Our ambitions today in Gothenburg were nothing short of grand! We had booked an exhilarating high-speed open boat excursion that promised to whisk us away to a local seal colony and offer stunning views of Gothenburg's rugged coastline. A little history tidbit: Gothenburg, founded in 1621 by King Gustavus Adolphus, is Sweden's second-largest city and a bustling port town renowned for its maritime heritage and picturesque archipelago.

However, the weather had a different agenda for us. As we disembarked from the ship, we were greeted by a torrential downpour that made Noah’s Ark seem like a sunny day at the beach. The rain was relentless, and we found ourselves herded toward the jetty where our RIB boat awaited. This would have been fine if Danny hadn’t forgotten to pack the ponchos, and of course, the gift shop at the port had none in stock.

By the time we were halfway to the dock, Danny was soaked to the bone, looking as if he had decided to take an impromptu dip in the Baltic Sea. I, fortunately, had my raincoat on, but my legs and sneakers were thoroughly drenched. To add insult to injury, the temperature was barely 60 degrees. The thought of Danny enduring a two-hour open-air boat ride while soaking wet and shivering was far from pleasant.

I promptly told him to turn right around, and we trudged back to the ship. The sight of us, particularly Danny looking like a drowned rat, must have been comical to the other passengers who were just disembarking. We had to laugh at the absurdity of it all—Danny catching pneumonia wasn’t on my itinerary!

I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t get to explore the charming town of Haga, known for its cobbled streets and cozy cafés, but health and comfort took priority. We considered braving the weather again later, but the rain continued to pour all day, so we decided to stay put and rest instead.

Despite the soggy setback, we still have five more days of adventure ahead. Next stop: Amsterdam! The weather forecast promises clear skies, so fingers crossed for smoother (and drier) sailing from here on out. Stay tuned for more escapades as we continue our European journey!
