How much fabric yardage do you usually buy when planning a project?

@SpringStarFangirl

I buy extra and then proceed to pattern puzzle like it's my job and get it out of half the recommended yardage.

Honestly, on of my favorite answers at fabric stores when asked how much I wanted was “how much have you got?”

When I'm buying for an historical project, I always buy 1 meter extra, just in case. Because there is always a case.

So I am a fabric ho and very short, but I've found that for most things 10 yards covers me safely (5 yards for Regency!) Of course that's just for historical stuff, I'm a little more prudent for modern things.

I don’t use modern patterns, so I just buy what I think I’ll need or slightly less since I’m a piecing queen lol

@Sabatuar

On average I usually just get four or five yards for any given project because that's usually what I need for my general size range in any given pattern, but since I mostly sew off of vintage patterns that tends to come out as much more than needed due to larger modern fabric widths.

I buy a little less - not because I'm cheap but because I'm short! I know I'll end up using less than the pattern says and I'm happy to piece / get creative with cutting if I underestimated

Good to have 10% more fabric, trims etc it is industrial standart. 10cm per meter of fabric is not us much, but good to include shrinkage of natural fabric on the plan. Getting extra button, zipp, even spool of tread is safe net that I like.

@DFarbklecks

I buy what the pattern suggests but I also buy second hand cuts a lot, so I may not have the option to buy as much as needed. I have gotten away with a full meter less than recommended before, but it really depends on the pattern(maker).

@christajennings3828

It depends what I'm planning on making. I'm short, but have long arms. So I may need a little extra for long sleeves, but a little less for a skirt.

@annerogers6895

I always buy extra fabric. I can make all the mock ups but something always goes wrong and I'll have to remake some part or just to short. So yep the more the better

@TheMagnoliaWitch

Technically I buy what I can afford at the time and then go back and buy more when I get the chance. 😂

@liav4102

Usually I buy fabric and then let it tell me what pattern it’s interested in

@jessiepfeiffer210

Usually a little more cuz extra pockets 😊

@IAmCraftingAgain

I work out each pattern manually to get the accurate answer/make my own patterns so buy correct amount so it's totally tetrised

@kalka1l

So buy double the fabric because I will make many mistakes and if I can’t make that part easy I will abandon it all and never sew.

@GrizzyLemming

Suggested pattern layouts can usually be improved upon, so at most the suggested quantity is sufficient

@jenniferbailey1580

I am short, and between the petite adaptations and careful layout the suggested amount is nearly always buying extra

@NicholasSchmidttorturer

I do buy a bit extra. I also am a bargain shopper so I look for natural fibers with discounts or in antique shops and thrift stores.
