Faulty Whistles (My Thomas Story Library Book Style)

To the Trains -> This is a story about Duncan, one day, he was showing off about how loud his whistle was, until he lost it from being used to much. Could Duncan still go on without using his whistle? Find out in this story.

One morning, Duncan was waiting for Peter Sam to deliver him some trucks so he could take them to Strawberry Grove, Duncan was also to take the Headmaster and his new organ, while they waited, the Headmaster played a lively tune.

Peter Sam, had steamed through the night to bring Duncan his trucks, but a low hanging branch knocked off his whistle as he approached the junction. This meant, he couldn't work until he got a new one.

"I can't work without my whistle." said Peter Sam, "It would be too dangerous." "An engine's not an engine without a whistle." Duncan boasted, and just to prove it, he let off a massive blast.

But Peter Sam just ignored him, Duncan puffed away in a big huff, he was cross.

"He's jealous of my fine whistle." grumbled Duncan, he whistled at some sheep, but they were too busy eating grass to take notice.

Duncan approached the level crossing where Elizabeth the Quarry Lorry was waiting with a farmer's prized bull, as Duncan puffed by the level crossing, he blew his whistle ever so loud. However, he hadn't noticed that his whistle had come loose.

Soon Duncan came across Terence the Tractor ploughing in a field, "He'll get the loudest, and the longest whistle yet." he chortled.

Duncan blew his whistle so hard that it shot off like a mighty rocket, and landed out of sight.

Everyone searched for Duncan's whistle, but it was nowhere to be seen. "We're stuck." said the driver, "We can't go without a whistle, it would be too dangerous." "Leave it to me." the Headmaster said.

For the rest of the day, Duncan didn't make a sound, but the Headmaster's organ did, as Duncan stopped at every Station, the Headmaster gave a toot on the organ, it alerted everyone just as well as a whistle would. Although Duncan didn't think so.

Duncan carried on quietly back to the yard as the Headmaster played the organ. "Look!" Rusty teased as Duncan got back to the Yard, "It's Duncan the Musical Engine!" "Let's whistle along!" chuffed Rheneas. The rest of the Narrow Gauge engines tooted their whistles.

"You really did well to deliver your goods without a whistle." said Peter Sam. "Do you think so?" said Duncan. "Absolutely!" replied Peter Sam, "Even though an engine's not an engine without a whistle!" "Or an organ!" chuckled the Headmaster, and he tooted the organ. All the engines tooted back, except Duncan who just grinned!
