So honest question. Many people complain about photographers making gear videos. However across the board (not just my channel) photographers get the most views from gear videos. Does anyone have any ideas why when a video about photography business that’s meant to help get no views?

From my POV, It’s like with anything, hard vs. easy. Running a photography business is hard, shopping for new gear with just hobbyist intentions is easy. There are always fewer people doing the hard thing than the easy thing.

People have GAS - there are many reasons for that - as a Pro I often watch these type of videos just to see what's coming down the pipe - I used to be a former Fuji Ambassador and was talking about more or less this with a Fuji Rep at some conference - although the actual conversation was why they made so many different cameras - anyway we came to the conclusion that it was similar to fishing. Lots of people spend thousands on their kit to catch a fish they cant eat and will continue to do so because the kit is the biggest part of the passion!!!!

Two reasons why I don’t watch a business video: 1) It isn’t specific to my business (Honeybook vs. Dubsado) and 2) I haven’t watched it YET (I save to a “business” playlist for a quiet period). I imagine that photography business videos are always going to get a lot less views because not everyone runs a business and because business videos are work whereas gear videos are entertaining.

People primarily scroll and watch YouTube to escape, for entertainment, not for work.

Depending on the target audience, some people enjoy photography more as a hobby (hence buying gear) and avoid focusing on ways to improve and actually become profitable (the business). A great was to tell this is to talk to any small business owner about how their business is structured. Their confusion, if any, is the answer.

Gear videos more directly sell products & are thus more valuable to advertisers. It’s not unlikely that the algorithm prioritizes those videos accordingly.

For me when I wanted to know what system to jump in, I spent countless hours watching videos about gear then eventually decided with Fujifilm. I don't watch too many gear videos anymore except if it has something to do with Fujifilm. But I think most of the Youtubers are aiming for views and sponsorship and maybe will get free gear when they make videos about gear.

I good rule of thumb is don’t listen to what people say, instead observe what they do.

It’s natural. People that practice photography as a hobby are more than the ones looking to make a business out of it. Also, this kind of people usually learn the business from someone already in it, so no need to watch YouTube

Great series to get new views is from beginners to pro light room edit tutorials for wedding photographers

It is a cultural problem. An obsession over something new and shiny that will make our lives better, new and improved. There is always an obsession about something new. Especially technology. I personally like the 1-2 hour training videos that were during a real wedding. My teacher said there have always been gear heads even in the film days, it is just that modern digital technology has made them worse.

Because MOST ppl aren’t either 1. Interested in or 2. At the point in their journey yet where such advice is useful. Just because someone is interested in wedding photography doesn’t mean they want to watch a whole video pushing a boring and useless program like honeybook. Gear is much more interesting. So is posing. Lighting. Settings. Problem solving.

I enjoy your videos John! Im a wedding photographer and I personally don't like the sit down videos..I'd rather have BTS or see you apply the thing your talking about.

People want to invest in gear to pay for business when in reality it should be invest in business to pay for gear

Sometimes business advice videos are so generic that it's not helpful.

Also think more people like gear and YouTube search specific gear?

What quite a lot of people here said. Got business and tutorial stuff saved for later often times, wince those are the ones I wanna pay attention to. Gear review stuff is more in the radio territory, doing something else mainly. So I'll watch it, but also not lol

Because doing the actual work to build the business is not glamorous or instant. Folks like to imagine having the “gear” with out building the work it takes to be legit. 🤷🏾‍
