My understanding is that the Polyps were overtly aggressive and threatened the Yithians' very existence. That said, that narrative was 'written by the victors' as it were, so it's entirely up for debate how factual that interpretation may be. Or maybe violence is inherent within all forms of life, however broadly the term is applied. That certainly seems to be an overall underlying theme of Mr Lovecraft's works.
