Please do Olusegun Obasanjo, who is likely the most important modern African leader. 1. As a young General his victories ended the Nigerian Civil War (1967 – 1970) 2. When people feared the end of the war would lead to ethnic massacres he turned around and defended the people he just conquered from his own army. 3. Twice he was persuaded to replace a dictator and both times handed the country back to democracy. Critically, he not only stepped down but refused to run in either election. 4. He spent 4 years in prison for opposing another military dictatorship, 5. When the dictator died he was released and this time ran for president and won in 1999 and was reelected in 2003 for his final term. 6. He somehow held together the nation that had every reason to implode yet left the nation in 2007 in a state that has seen seven presidential elections and multiple peaceful transfers of power. The near exclusion of Obasanjo on YOUTUBE in educational videos about African rulers when he should have more than anyone is a confounding and suspicious phenomenon. Yet it follows the pattern of ignoring the best of African agency and focusing on the worst, unless its success about Civil Rights
