If Captain Witwicky is Simmons’ grandfather, it implies a family link to Sam Witwicky. Following standard naming conventions where males pass on their last name, it’s possible that Captain Witwicky had multiple children: one who led to Simmons (possibly through a daughter who took her husband’s last name, Simmons) and another who led to Sam’s father.
