Megan Tan

All jokes aside, I’ve been hiding something from you. This May, I attempted to submit my photos for the photoVogue South East Asia and East Asia Challenge. Despite high hopes, we didn’t get selected and I wanted to take this as a time to reflect on being a creator, artist and self employed. You don’t always achieve what you want and you don’t always get selected by the brands, or people you want to. I take this as a learning curve to improve and a good experience to try out shooting portraits on 35mm film.

This series of photos was an attempt to show the contrast between my heritage and my upbringing. Growing up in the big city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I was brought up in a very modern setting. However, I think Malaysia is such a beautiful mix of culture, colors and flavor and wanted to integrate this into my work.
