Keir Starmer’s labour party has consulted the U.S. on its position in the Israel – Palestine conflict. The party has faced both internal and external criticism over its lack of support for a ceasefire. Now it seems, not having much regard for foreign policy itself, the Labour Party is beginning to replicate its procedure during the 9/11 crisis where it adopted U.S. foreign policy as its own. PoliticsHome understands Labour has been influenced by their consultations with the U.S. In December the U.S. deputy ambassador to the UN stated that ‘Calling for a ceasefire ignores the fact that Hamas has committed acts of terror and is still holding civilians hostage’. The country then went on to veto a UN ceasefire resolution for the region.
Aside from the particulars of this case, the Labour Party’s position undermines U.K. democracy and sovereignty in this action. Its domestic policy is generated by focus groups, limiting the choices voters are enabled to make at an election and its foreign policy is generated abroad, completely undercutting British sovereignty and self-determination. If Labour wishes to avoid the mistakes of 1997-2010 replicated it must present its own bold and original policy for the country.
