The fact that schools haven’t been teaching this to begin with says a lot about the educational system

It was spring 2006 at a north Texas high school. We’d just finish up state testing the previous week or so, and my math teacher needed “filler” to teach in class. That man gave my algebra 2 class a crash course about credit cards, mortgages, balancing a check book, interest rates, and most importantly, saving money. That same teacher is now a principal. Mr. Reza, thank you!

We used to call that Home Economics. You learn basics in upkeep. Like cooking, minor repairs, balancing a bank account, groceries. Then it was gone mid 90s along with wood/metal shop and anything else that taught base life skills.

There used to be a math course like this at the junior level (an alternate to taking algebra 2), but the govt replaced it. It’s good to see it come back.

When I was high school in the 70s, we had Consumer Math. They taught us how to budget, maintain a checking account, things I learned at home but took it anyway.

The fact that these basic life skills are not already part of the curriculum everywhere is an example of the utter worthlessness of public education. We need private schools, using the current public school buildings, financed by a voucher system.

Teach them the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights too.

Our youth (as well as everyone else) really needs this. True freedom comes when you are not a slave to poor financial decisions and when you can peacefully live within your means. It’s healthy to have a drive for more than what you have. When you can do that with strategy, knowledge, and temperance; life can open up in huge ways. Praying millions of kids are impacted by this financial literacy education, it will drastically improve their lives. Better life decisions will come from it. God bless the USA

Used to be called home economics- as students we spent 2 weeks learning about budgeting, paying bills & interest. Either fall or spring semester, depending on your birthday because the alternate semester was drivers' ed.

In my home state of Virginia, it’s a requirement to take a personal finance class in order to graduate high school. They taught us about credit and debit cards, investing, debt, etc. They even prepared us for job interviews and how to fill out resumes.

In High School, I took a required Economics class where the teacher taught us the opposite about the stock market (that when the stocks were red is when you sell them), and I also took an elective Money/Budgeting class that was taught entirely thru video and if asked, the teacher (who watched these with us) could not answer a single question.

I hope that will soon be happening across the United States! Financial literacy needs to start in elementary school and be built upon throughout middle in high school. It is sorely needed.

Bring back civics too!! Do you know how many people think the president does the budget? I'm flabbergasted by the ignorance!
