🤨 No. It’s giving policing someone's blackness because they don’t fit the stereotypes

Hey man. Josh is one of the most unproblematic, genuine talents. He don't deserve to be up there. He doesn't turn black issues into comedy.

I understand his point was on performative blackness and how its manifestation on both sides of the political aisle is problematic. I see a lot of that in the Hispanic community myself. I just disagree that Josh doesn't tell any jokes. He does a lot of set up and relies a lot on silence and context, but he's ultimately leading up to a punch line. He weaves several setups together into a massive callback. I also think it's kind of weird to criticize Josh for the way he dresses and presents himself. Like, because I don't dress or talk like a stereotypical Puerto Rican, that means I'm performing for white people? Again, I understand his point, I just don't think his arguments were sufficient to attribute Josh's demeanor to a performance of his ethnicity.

How you gonna put Josh Johnson in the same category as the rest?

Josh’s rise has been one of the few joys I’ve had in this scary world. Really enjoying his comedy lately.

I don’t like this title. It implies that Josh is only trying to communicate with white fans when he’s really just doing his thing. I’ve worked in comedy for years now and people like what they like. Good comedians don’t reach everyone and that’s not really their fault.

Gotta’ be honest FD, not one of your better recommendations.

What is performative blackness?? If you’re black youre black🤷🏾‍

Maybe Josh is just a good comedian and not just a "black comedian for white people".

I was interested, but given the comments here (even and especially the positive ones) hard pass for me. I don't know the other comic, but I think there's plenty there for me in Josh's comedy as a black person from a similar area and background as Josh.

Bro you wrong for comparing Josh to that other maga clown. Just because Josh is not talking about food stamps and getting shot doesn't mean he's not a proud black comedian. I guess even Jordan missed some shots but this is definitely a brick brother

Ngl I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt and made it half way through. Just because comedy requires thought doesn't make it for white ppl. He never addressed his point about performative blackness in relation to Josh Johnson just that he's an echo chamber for liberal thought. Which sure he is just as any comedian or personality is no matter the audience because people don't listen or spend money to go see people they disagree with. I can enjoy josh Johnson and Ryan Davis for what they are. If it vibes with people but you don't get it doesn't make it problematic because of the audience that enjoys it. Same reason I can enjoy FDs videos and HBomberGuys.

Oh cool, way to throw a shit sandwich into my feed. So is Jawn just going full Id-Pol Slop clout chasing Josh or is he coming for Dick Gregory too? I almost clicked on the shit too, just glad I scanned the replies before ruining my mood even more than this post already did.

What’s funny is many online black folks would compare Josh Johnson to FD. On a recent episode of Olay and Friends somebody said their brother wont watch FD cause he (in so many words) makes content for academics or self deemed liberal intellectuals. I guess I can understand that critique if as black people our purpose should be to speak only to those at the most center of the cultural spectrum, to the exclusion of all other flavors within the black diaspora. Instead I think we can be challenged as a community to expose ourselves to things we weren’t raised with, aren’t used to, or even struggle to resonate with but are still BLACK because it comes from black folk.

As a foreign white it’s always interesting how perspective works, I’ve heard white Americans criticize Josh’s comedy for leaning to hard on “aren’t white people silly” and pandering to black folks. But the calm / rational other perspective has always resonated for me, and I have to respect how well he sets his jokes up, whether I’m the intended target of his humor or his intended audience.
