I just flew Turkish Airlines for the first time a month ago and if you have a long layover they will actually give you up to two nights in a hotel room for free so you can enjoy Istanbul instead of waiting in the airport. Turkish Airlines is a lovely airline. Probably the best I've ever flown. The food is fabulous and the service is spectacular.

Had a 14-hour layover in Istanbul and decided not to waste it. I explored the city, visited the Blue Mosque, got lost in the Grand Bazaar, and sipped Turkish tea with a local. Best 'accidental' adventure ever!

I loved my 8 hour layover in London on my way to Stuttgart. I loved it so much that I highly recommend it. Especially when you arrive on a Sunday morning and go to Buckingham Palace just in time for the changing of the guard, go to a pub and try out British food like the world famous fish and chips with a pint (20 fl oz) and even do Sunday Roast. Plus, you will have the best public transportation experience! After all, the UK invented the train.

Yep 16 hours on our way back from Cairo in Frankfurt. We got a hotel at the airport. It was set up perfectly for this kind of layover. We could walk to the hotel across the street without going outside.

I think six was my longest. Even the time I missed my connection due to a delay in the initial flight I believe was only four hours. Suggestion for another poll: "Have you ever run into someone you know in the airport completely by chance?"

Self inflicted. I was flying back from Bahrain, landed in Philly for a 9 hour layover. I was offered $500 towards future flight and took the deal. The good news, my actions helped a young family, and I was able to navigate the entire airport a few times and learn where everything was located 😊

Yes! Flying back from Bali Indonesia, I had to layover in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia. Our connecting flight was the NEXT DAY! We had to get a hotel room. In the room's view, I saw the Petronas Towers.

My wife and I were traveling from San Antonio Texas to Sydney Australia. Our layover in Vancouver Canada was supposed to be about three hours, but the plane in Vancouver broke down and we stayed overnight in the Vancouver Airport. Our layover time there was about thirteen hours.

I was on Delta flight coming from Brussels to Atlanta. 2/3s of the way and one of the planes generators blew. We were forced to land in Stevensville, Newfoundland. Since there were no Canadian immigration officials, we were escorted off the plane and locked in a building for 12 hours waiting for a rescue plane from Laguardia. The Canadians were very gracious. Got home to Atlanta 20 hours late.

When I used to travel to India as a child with my parents from Australia, we had layovers for longer than 12 hours. I totally hated it

I sometimes go out of my way to schedule long layovers. Allows me to take a quick tour of the layover city

Sometimes, I deliberately chose a long (as in overnight) layover. A regular destination for me often requires a connection with a VERY early start if I am to get there the same day. Consequently, I choose to stay overnight near the airport if I want to avoid getting up at around the same time I will arrive at my final destination (includes journeys to and from the airports) Alternatively, I can leave home around lunchtime and catch an early evening flight, stay overnight at a hotel near to my connecting airport, and catch an early afternoon flight, fully rested to my destination. One significant advantage is that I do not have a connection, which requires a gate to gate dash! Given the option, no surprise which one I prefer. P.S. For that particular journey, I am fortunate to be fully flexible and can take my time.

I had a 24hr layover in Addis Abba when our flight from Cape Town landed 10 mins after the flight left for Toronto. Ethiopian Airlines gives you a free room. We also had a slightly shorter connection between Tanzania and Namibia. That hotel room was outside of the airport.

Iceland calls it a "stopover" and you're free to make it as long as you want, within reason.
