Crafted Workshop

Alright y'all, I need some help with the project I'm working on, my finishing room/metalworking shop. This room was used as a spray booth when the shop was a cabinet shop back in the day (check out the last picture) and, because of that, there's already a 24" hole punched through the ceiling up into the attic then a shuttered exhaust going out the side.

I've been looking at tube axial fans (cookmfg.com/product/tube-axial-fan/) but I've got a few concerns. First, they're REALLY expensive, especially when you factor in the required ductwork (well over $2,000 after shipping). Second, I'm worried a fan that powerful might be too much for my needs, which is really just exhaust when I'm spraying finishes or welding.

Do any of y'all have a similar setup? If so, I'd love to hear what kind of fan you're using and what you think of it.
Unfortunately, there's not much in my area (Asheville, NC) in the used market. If any of you have a fan you're looking to sell, let me know!

Call your air conditioning guy. He probably has some used air handler units from previous jobs. The squirrel cage fan is perfect for your application. You just have to convert wiring and build an enclosure. There are lots of videos on how to do it My a/c guy gave me one and it works great for my 500 square foot shop.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing what you come up with since I’d like to do something similar in my next shop.

Chris from "make everything" YouTube channel. Has a lot metal working videos and he discusses what things he uses. I believe he mentions what exhaust

Attic fan could work well too!

Use a dryer vent fan mounted inside of the 24 inch duct. They are 6 inches in diameter but will create the flow you need in a 24 inch diameter duct

Look at used restaurant exhaust fans they pretty much do the exact same thing!

@cjmindustries

We built our powder coating booth and exhaust hood for our plasma table with these. 2 yrs of near daily use and they have held up. Plenty of flow if you open up a door so they can draw in fresh air. https://amzn.to/3zpamE8

Also in Asheville 🚵🏼‍♂️. I’ve done some ventilation on commercial jobs and most use either a roof or wall mounted vent fan from somewhere the supply house. I’ve installed some of those before and they range in size by quite a bit to match the airflow and turn over you’re looking for. You can also add passive dampers so you won’t depressurize the space. I just installed a high power range vent fan in a home with 600cfm in and 600cfm make up air fantech, they were from supplyhouse.com and ducts were from local supply house, it works grea
