Bless the Joels, big and small. They provide our hungry little mouths with so much more content than we deserve.

OMG I AM ABSOLUTELY AMPED UP! This movie took a genuine toll on my health because it just occupied a ridiculous amount of space in my brain and I would love to hear your thoughts!

Once I was at a party for my Spanish class hosted by the teacher and West Side Story came up and how much we all loved it. As it turned out, I had bought a VHS copy of the movie for our white elephant gift exchange, which was very exciting when it was opened lol. I'm old enough that this was considered a good gift

Agreed, it made some weird choices, but Rachel Zegler was phenomenal

Tbh when the line "You did good buddy boy" was delivered to Anybodys I started sobbing in the movie theater. I'm a trans woman, and I had a really rocky coming out in 2019-2020 time period, even by 2021 and even now, I am not accepted by a large part of my own family and I lost so many close friends along the way. The simple and honest affirmation of gender really got to me in a way that I had never had a piece of media do. I don't know if the movie is good by critical or close inspection but that moment was enough to leave a lasting impact on me.

Who is this big Joel character? I only know of little Joel and his appalling views on the oompah loompahs

I actually really liked it. I loved the 60s version growing up (as evidenced by my pfp lol) but I found Rachel Zegler’s Maria much more believable than Natalie Wood’s. The main thing that ruins it for me is Ansel Elgort. Even without acknowledging the allegations against him, I just found him very creepy.

I loved this movie but I was upset they didn’t have have Maria and Tony sing Somewhere

Oh no! I loved it! I watched every day before bed for like a month. The lead actress was such a doll!

I grew up in the theater and I'd never actually seen this show before going into the movie, so it was pretty shocking to hear the rest of When You're a Jet, especially after Jan 6. That should have been everyone's first clue that "maybe these white street thugs obsessed with fighting Puerto Ricans" are the bad guys, and Tony's stuck in their orbit despite wanting out.

Okay I’m glad it’s not just me, I thought the choice to market the film as this classic that we all know and love was a big mistake(we don’t)

I hope this thread doesn't perpetuate 1950s racist tropes but still devolves into a pastel colored song-and-dance extravaganza that is also a knife-fight gangwar.
