Game Science released a short teaser trailer for their upcoming game Black Myth: Zhong Kui at gamescon today. I have no intentions to make any videos to cover this teaser because it is simply too short. For those who are unfamiliar with Zhong Kui (pretty much everyone outside of China), he is a fictional Taoist exorcist that first appeared in writing during the Tang Dynasty (7th century). Tang Emperor Xuanzong was particular fond of Zhong Kui's stories as he would often gift drawings of Zhong Kui to key officials during New Years with the intentions that Zhong Kui's paintings would protect these key officials from evil spirits and ghosts. With this imperial stamp of approval, the practice of worshipping Zhong Kui as a protector from evil spirit quickly spread amongst the commoners. Folktales of Zhong Hui capturing varies ghosts and evil spirits also sprung up as he quickly cemented himself as a minor Taoist deity.
For gameplay, I think Zhong Kui will be a huge departure from Wukong with completely different gameplay systems. Narrative wise, I think Game Science really wanted the freedom to craft whatever story they wish as Zhong Hui does not have a traditional storyline attached to him as Wukong does with Journey to the West.
From a few of Weibo posts (Chinese Twitter) by the leads at Game Science, it seems like they decided sometimes earlier this year to abandon their current Black Myth: Wukong DLC plans to instead tackle this new project instead. I think internally, they became a bit too stressed about matching the expectations on the quality and timing of the DLC and decided it would be better for their creative minds to just create a new game with less limitations and expectations.
So the big takeaways from all this is: 1. Game Science is now working on a new game called Black Myth: Zhong Kui and since they just pivoted to this new project earlier this year, I think the release will be 2027 or later. 2. They were not completely happy with their progress on the Wukong DLC and have now scrapped that project to tackle it afresh at a later time. I personally don't think they will work on it until Zhong Kui is finished so who knows when and if they will make a Wukong DLC or perhaps just make a Wukong 2 at that point.
