Devs and players ruined MMOs regardless of whether they used UE5 or not

That's like asking if a new book binding technique has ruined a niche genre of literature. Of course it hasn't.

UE5 is amazing. The problem is "new devs" who just go in and slap assets together without doing any type of optimization.

its kinda hurt a lot of genres I think. From my perspective in the survival crafting genre theres a lot of 'sameness' across the board. Not many uniquely crafted games these days

The genre was twitching on the ground before UE5. Players and devs killed it. Before the engine ever came.

No what has ruined games isn’t the engine it’s the talentless hacks we are hiring. All the old heads from the generation past are gone. They used to write new engines for games and invent of new rendering methods and optimization of a game to run with hardware limitations. All of those those geniuses and great men have aged out of the industry. Games used to be made by computer science nerds and engineers. Total geeks. Today we have blue hairs and zoomer women who barely understand the engines they use and lean heavily on tools and frameworks to get the job done. Inventing sick RPG mechanics and cool new technical feats has left the chat. We’ve made everything so accessible that the only things people are required to learn about making games is the bare minimum.

Not UE5's fault, most new MMO games just been quite slop, like sort of "okayish" leveling experience, nothing too memorable, nothing too bad, but.. they all have one thing common (if not bad/boring combat feet also, as some do, why downgrade from your current old mmo to something where combat feels poop?): endgame is repetitive chores only, itemization & gearing is boring, world feels boring and "small" and not enough content and not enough speed to bring out new content, they are competing against mmos with lots of content already, so they should know they need to be fast, even it means working burnout speed for the first 3-6 years the game is out of official launch, they need couple huge content updates fast. Also, a solid pvp mode and not just after thought and not deciding what the game wants to be. If the game is "pvp focused game", make it feel so, if pve focus, make it have lots of content for full pve andies.. but decide.. and not go half-assing back and forth, like with New World.. they literally killed their own game by doing all mistakes i am talking about here.

I struggle to say it ruined it but it's also part of the reason newer devs are less skilled than the old school guys which I guess would directly lead to worse gaming outcomes but at the same time, put in the hands of someone who is already skilled at what they do and it becomes the most powerful tool you can have.

Gotta love how game optimization has been boiled down to glorified motion blur. 😢

UE5 is amazing. It has powerful capabilties and makes it easier to create complex games. The problem is the developers and their employers. Poor ideas, lazyness, poor implementation, predatory monetization (microtransactions), rushed products. It is not only MMOs that have fallen, games in general have taken a turn for the worse. This is why retrogaming is such a strong trend these days.

I worked with UE5 for a year as a graphics programmer. IMHO it is a beta product that needs another few years of features and optimization. The high level documentation is great. The low level documentation is OK. The middle level is completely missing which means figuring out "best practices" takes time -- usually spending hours and hours to find one key critical answer. Yes, there are tons of options to tweak but it takes significant amount of time to find what settings are best for your use case because UE5 is only really optimized for Fortnite and everything else is only half-baked. Unfortunately AAA doesn't want to invest the time teaching artists how to best use the engine so there is a lot of marketplace slop and out-dated information which leads to bad first impressions from gamers. Also, NOT everyone is "sold" on the vaseline TAA smear with bad upscaling.

Tools are just that, tools. They are not inherently good nor evil, but they can be used for art or trash depending on the talent of the person using them.

I dont know if UE5 ruined mmo or not but nevertheless i believe the best approach to a mmo should be timeless graphics since mmos tend to have the most longevity for all game genres. From thats point of view UE5 kind ruins it because of the long run in terms of development, so you always at risk for your game to have dated graphics upon release

Frame Generation and all these new forms of AntiAliasing just hurt my eyes. I’ve been spoiled by 120fps or higher for almost a decade now.

No. Over monetization is killing MMO's. From the developers and publishers, as well as content creators being financially tied to the product, and the rmt'ers going unchecked. The entire genre has become "How can I make the most money from this," instead of "is this game actually fun?"

UE4 should be used more, at least for the time being. Look at Stelar Blade

Theirs just too much slop due to the ease of use tools, i do believe ashes of creation will be a banger
