@vivilikesfr1es

im a khmer girl currently still living in phnom penh and here’s what i have to say for for cambodian food; Nom Banh Chok and KuyTeav are definite must haves!! Nom Banh Chok is a noodle soup that’s refreshing with relatively milder flavors, it commonly is made with fermented fish and is always topped with a variety of fresh vegetables and herbs. My personal favorite topping is just fresh cut cucumbers, but make sure to add banana blossom as a topping because it’s something unique to southeast asia and adds a nice crunch to the overall texture. My family typically prefers the style of Nom Banh Chok with a greener soup, and a nice clean green color is a sign of a good soup. Make sure to squeeze a bit of lime to your bowl before you take a first bite! Kuyteav is another noodle soup, often eaten for breakfast, that has a beefy base and can be eaten with different shapes of rice noodle. The toppings typically include beef balls, slices of beef, bean sprouts, and several different herbs. There’s also a very popular version with fish meatballs (although it’s not so much ball shaped as it is flat), which is also amazing. It can also typically be served with 油条 (youtiao- chinese fried donut) as a side as well as some generic hot tea lol. Different stores will serve their KuyTeav with different sauces, so make sure to try whatever is offered but it can be sort of hit or miss. But KuyTeav is a personal favorite of mine and the ultimate breakfast dish for me, and just like Nom Banh Chok, make sure to squeeze some lime before you eat! enjoy your time in Cambodia Jiny, i’m sure you’ll love it :)

Highly recommend Bánh Xeo/Bánh Khọt!! And all the tropical fruits you can get if it's in season like custard apple (mãng cầu), mangosteen (măng cụt), longan (nhãn), rambutan (chôm chôm), jackfruit (mít) and of course...durian (sau riêng) 😏 Try durian ice cream at least!!! And for some simple stuff, try desserts that have coconut milk like so many different types of chè

@shaymin33988

pleaseee eat “bun cha” (vermicelli and meat patties) jiny! such a delicious and fresh tasting dish. i also recommend going to the trendy cafes and trying a coconut coffee or egg coffee, as they’re extremely popular! “banh mi” (baguette sandwiches), i think the classic cold cuts with pate is the most popular, but there’s also grilled meat, or meatballs (super good!) “banh canh” (thick crab soup) “bun thit nuong cha gio” (vermicelli with fresh herbs, grilled meats, eggrolls) is my absolute favorite dish because it’s so simple and hard to get tired of! “che ba mau” (three color dessert) is a popular dessert with jellies, red beans, mung bean, coconut milk, and crushed ice

As a Vietnamese, it depends on where you're going! Different regions have different specialties, but if you're going to the Ho Chi Minh City/Sagion area (this is where my family is from so I feel the most confident giving you recs from here lol), definitely try Hu Tieu (noodle dish–you can try both the soup version and dry version), Vietnamese coffee (try egg coffee if you want to try something super unique!), Bun Bo Hue (another noodle dish and personally my fav–think of it as a spicy, more flavorful version of pho), and if you're feeling adventurous, try Oc Len Xao Dua (it's basically sea snails in a delicious coconut broth–trust me it's sooo good lol). Let me know if you want more recs cuz I have a whole arsenal of answers lol :) Oh and also a couple more things: 1. Seafood in general in Vietnam is so amazing and fresh because our country is mostly coastline lol so be sure to have a lot of it! 2. Of course you should try Pho too, but I didn't mention it initially because everyone was already saying it lol. The regional pho in Saigon is my favorite variant, but of course I'm biased :) 3. Some breakfast dishes to try with your coffee: Op La (eggs fried and served on a sizzling pan–also comes with bread to dip in the yolk and a bunch of other things; there are also many different varients, I like Bo Op La though (Beef version)), Bot Chien (fried rice cakes mixed with eggs and dipped in soy sauce–this is my personal fav breakfast food because I'm a sucker for carbs and soy sauce lol), and Banh Mi 4. If you like crab, try Bun Rieu–it's a crab tomato noodle soup that is absolutely delicious (this is my mom's fav and she grew up in Saigon lol) 5. I saw someone else mention this and I totally agree: try all of the tropical fruits here! There are so many and they're all delicious. Perhap the most infamous is sau rieng (durian), but my favorites are chom chom (rambutan), nhan (longan), and jackfruit. Other fruits my family love are mangosteens and sugar apples!
