Hi Dr. Dray & Charlene, I'm still watching even though thankfully I don't have any hair loss concerns. I think that it's important for people to know the difference between "tension" (pulling on the hair strands) & "traction" (hair strands connecting with/rubbing on itself or on another surface), in regards to hair loss and hair breakage. (Keeping in mind some people's hair loss is due/not due to either, both or neither). I think that the term "tension alopecia" is more appropriate to use in some cases, rather than "traction alopecia". For instance, a person who regularly wears a tight bun may have both "tension" and "traction" alopecia They may have bald patches at the scalp (due to tension) from the hair strands being pulled from the scalp...and they may also have hair breakage (due to traction) where a tight hair tie eg. rubs away and eventually breaks the hair near to the scalp, or further along the strands. Also, sometimes people assume that their hair density (amount of hairs on one's scalp) is getting thinner, when they notice that their pony-tail appears & feels thinner along the mid-sections and at the ends. When a person grows out their hair, it grows at the same rate as previously; but logically it takes a longer amount of time for a new hair to grow from the scalp to the longer length. That's why reducing tension & traction (and chemical treatments & heat styling) is a particular concern for those who have longer hairstyles. If unsure and concerned about hair loss or breakage, it is better to seek medical advice first rather than self-diagnose or waste time & money on supplements/hair products that may be ineffective and not actually tackle the root (😂) cause. Dermatologists can diagnose many (internal) medical conditions by observing and testing a patient's hair, skin & nails and then can refer you to the relevant specialist where necessary. eg. A consultation with an Endocrinologist (hormone specialist) can be beneficial to all genders, especially as we approach, or are in our wiser years. 👱
