No one turns into an angel when we die. I actually think it’s important to correct that poor theology, even in the aftermath of tragedy, because it obscures the one thing that offers real hope and joy: the gospel. We are people, made in God’s image, that can enjoy eternal fellowship with our Creator in heaven through Jesus’s sacrifice for us. That’s good news — even better news than becoming an angel.

Thank you so much for saying this! My 3 year old daughter passed last May and it just didn’t sit right with my spirit when cards, urns, programs, poems, etc. referred to her as an angel for her celebration of life. The word angel appeared in all of them and I just did not want her referred to as an angel! She is healed, and in the arms of our Father! She is far more than an angel, she is a child of God!

Even the angels stand in awe of his grace towards humanity.

I agree 100%! My daughter passed away 4 years ago this month. I will correct people when they say she’s an angel now. It also bothers me when people see butterflies, or something that was special to the person who passed away, and say that’s their loved one giving them a sign that they’re ok. I will see a sunset that my daughter loved, and thank God for the reminder that she’s with Him.

When my mother passed away so many people told me that she is looking down on me now. I told them, “No, she is not. She is with Jesus”.

Amen! Tragically, I lost my daughter in 2019 and so many loving and well meaning people tried to comfort me by telling me my daughter earned her wings and she’s an angel now. But that’s just not so. Angels are created beings. Created by our Father as ministering spirits who have been worshiping God since the beginning with exception to the 1/3 who fell. (Demons) As a child of God, the angels minister to us as we were created, a separate race of humans in the image of God, created lower than the angels for a while. It brings comfort to me knowing that my daughter is preparing for the wedding feast being tended to by the angels and I long for the day that we’ll all be together at that feast. 🙌🏼

People also don’t come back as cardinals (the bird).

I thought the same when reading the news report. Also the idea that our dead loved ones are looking down on us and watching over us.

There are so many misconceptions about death. After my daughter died two years ago, people would tell me she's a butterfly, or a cardinal, or they tried talking to her. All those ideas do not bring peace. My peace is knowing she's no longer hurting or sad. She's perfect, in the presence of a perfect God who loves her more than I ever could. One day I'll see her again. I may cry everyday until then, but my hope is in Christ.

My 24 year old son tragically passed 4 years ago and I’ve never called him an angel. I know what the Bible says. I’m in a faith based support group but many call their children angels. I’ve never said anything there because I know not everyone is a believer, I don’t agree with believing he’s looking down on me or my guardian angel. I appreciate you for saying this.

Amen! I hear this misconception all the time.

What’s even more amazing is that you are a saint when you die if you are in the state of grace! By “saint” it’s not the canonized type of Saint but you are now apart of the church triumphant. Even angels envy those who are in this state of place with Our Lord!

Thank you for posting this. There’s such confusion on this topic. I think mostly it’s nominal Christians or non Christians who believe this error, but I’ve heard church-going professing Christians refer to people who died becoming angels.

When the Bible uses “like” like in Matthew. 22:30. That means he is using a metaphor, even I get that.

I’m glad I’ll be my perfected human self in heaven! And to get to know angels especially my guardian. And the saints and The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit, Our Blessed Mother and her most chaste spouse Joseph, and all the prophets who are saints! St. Paul! St. John & all the apostles, saints all. And St. Padre Pio.

Why do people not look up what the original word blessed means? Even though it's translated as one word it has several different meanings depending of the passage and context! Happy, Fortunate, Highly favored, Worthy of praise, Adorable, To speak well of, There is a blessed that is only used for God
