In the Autumn, several garden maintenance tasks can be undertaken which will help plants thrive. One such thing to prepare for is Wind Rock.
Wind rock happens when strong winds repeatedly shake and loosen a rose plant at its base. Over time, this movement causes the roots to rock back and forth in the soil, breaking off fine roots and creating small gaps around the rootball.
When that happens, several problems follow:
π The plant canβt anchor itself properly, so it becomes unstable.
π Damaged roots canβt take up enough water and nutrients.
π Those air gaps in the soil allow cold air and frost to reach the roots in winter.
π As a result, the rose may start to look weak, produce fewer flowers, or even die back in severe cases.
How to prevent wind rock:
π In autumn or early winter, firm the soil around the base of your roses to keep them stable.
π Stake or support newly planted or top-heavy roses.
π Make sure your roses are planted deeply enough, with the graft union (the knobbly part where the rose is joined to the rootstock) just below soil level, which helps anchor them more firmly.
If your garden is particularly exposed, windbreaks or hedges can reduce the strain on plants.
