How about a bike that doesn't have a substantial list of items that need addressed? How about the manufacturer actually finish development of their product before releasing it for consumption? How about consumers flexing their power by saying "NO" to these products? I don't want a project, I just want a solid bike.

I’m mostly interested in its reliability. The overall package and feature set is incredibly attractive. I’m between this and the crf 300 rally for a very off-road capable relatively lightweight adv bike.

I have to admit that as of right now I am a little bit disappointed with the 390. It does look like a good bike and I think if you don’t own a bike and your considering it, this 390 might not be a bad choice but for those of us who are already on a bike Like mine, a lightweight 300 rally I was hoping more for a powerful version of that bike, which this is to some degree, but the trade-off does not seem worth the cost. I know the 300 rally is not your favorite bike and probably the things you don’t like about it are the stuff that I would like to remedy but as far as the additional cost of buying a new bike and outfitting it, it does not look like the 390 will be what I sell my rally for.

My time with the KTM 390 Adventure R is coming to an end soon, to allow the time/funding to review new bikes. However, there are a few more episodes coming out: Episode 4 focuses on vibration reduction, adding power, fixing small issues, and addressing suspension. Episode 5 will offer a direct head to head comparison with the 890 Adventure R, and Episode 6 will offer comparisons to direct competitors like the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and CFMOTO Ibex 450 (450MT).
Thanks to @blackdogcycleworks for sending out their rear cargo rack (pictured), which installs easily and addresses the glaring omission of any rack or attachment points from the factory.
I have been testing the Powertronics FuelX Pro to improve low end response, the Mako360 from XC Gear and Motion Footpegs from Motion Factory Racing to reduce felt vibrations, and more I'll address in coming episodes.
