KDIDPWC ISSUES ULTIMATUM TO MANIPUR GOVT OVER IDP WELFARE DEMANDS

The Kangpokpi District Internally Displaced Persons Welfare Committee (KDIDPWC) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Manipur government, demanding enhanced welfare measures for nearly 50,000 Kuki-Zo internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in relief camps since the May 2023 violence. The committee has set a deadline of December 18, 2025, warning that protests will begin if their demands are not addressed.
In a memorandum, KDIDPWC highlighted several pressing issues, including inadequate daily relief allowances, irregularities in Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) payments, insufficient compensation for partially damaged homes, inconsistent educational and medical support, lack of long-term rehabilitation for families unable to return to the Imphal valley, and the need for security on supply routes. The committee also called for compensation for families who lost land during the conflict.
While the Manipur government is reportedly implementing a phased rehabilitation program, including financial aid and pre-fabricated housing for affected families, civil society organisations continue to raise concerns over the living conditions in camps, limited livelihood opportunities, and the slow pace of rehabilitation. Various community groups have also staged protests demanding safe returns, proper compensation, and better enforcement of government measures.
