The Patient Story

"I remember we sat them down and, you know, we just said, you know, mommy's sickness is back and mommy has to get more medicine, probably, maybe some surgeries. And, you know we're going to get the cancer out of her body again. But mommy's going to be tired. Mommy's going to be sick. And I remember my four year old. She was really sad about that. She was really sad because… I just remember last year when I was on chemo, they weren't allowed. I was I brought home like a a pump for two days every round of chemo and like, I wasn't allowed to, like, hold them or they couldn't be on me." - Kalei, stage 4 colorectal cancer.

Being a parent and having cancer is such a heartbreaking experience. In our latest patient story, Kalei shares how she handled telling her young daughters that the cancer came back.

My DIL is going through chemo right now for stage 3 ampullary cancer. They have 2 kids (6 & 2). It’s very hard on the entire family, but especially my DIL. Bless her! She’s still trying to work, but I think it’s getting too hard for her to do so. She asked my son if he would think less of her if she stopped working and went on short term disability. He told her absolutely not!!! We all want her around for a long time. When she came home from the hospital after having her wipple procedure done, I gave her a card that said “you’ve got this. It’s not the end of your story, but just a chapter in your very long book.” .

The fluorouracil IV pump. Oh yeah. For 48 hours, no showers…no carrying around your kids. Sucks, but the slow continuous dosing makes the treatment more effective. Keep up the positive attitude, listen to your care team, & most of all, keep the faith with Jesus. You can do this! ❤
