Music Maps Project

Asking for your help again. My next video will be on modulation, or key changes. When you think of a great key change that hits you real hard, what comes to mind? I'd like to get a variety of examples for different genres of music. Thanks a bunch

Tritone modulations and chromatic mediant modulations are also always epic when executed correctly, wish I could find some examples

Off the top my head Stevie wonder “heaven help us all” “I believe when I fall in love”, George jones “he stopped loving her today” how he just cranks her up so early in the song, Joao Gilberto “chega de saudade”, and “all the things you are” although obvious still awesome

The change from C# minor to C major towards the end of the slow movement of Schubert’s B-flat piano sonata D960….creates a sense of magic

Off the top of my head: David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" when the strings come in during the verses has a very dramatic modulation that always get me. Radiohead's "Wolf at the Door" modulates between the verses and choruses from minor to major on the same key. The modulation into the outro of "Karma Police" is another Radiohead example that stands out in my mind

Moving abruptly to the supertonic key towards the end of a tune, signalling that the end is coming.

Unsheltered by Gustavo Bertoni, from around 2:50 to 3:28. Song is in the key of F major, then there's a transition with ascending minor thirds (Fm -> G#m -> Bbm -> C#m) until it collapses to G# major. Gives the feeling of going through darkness and suddenly stepping into light.

I just worked on george benson's give me the night on piano this evening. The modulation on the bridge to the minor third is amazing and keeps the song interesting after it's very catchy first ideas. You can also tie that in with the interesting fact that chaining minor thirds together (Cm > Ebm > Gbm ...) creates that cinematic vibe of mystery, and like a controlled steadfast reduction of tension when going reverse (down). Hopefully this makes sense, but that's why you're here i guess 🫡
