The Lord Is My Shepherd Psalm 23:1

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” These opening words of Psalm 23 are some of the most beloved and comforting in all of Scripture. They paint a picture of a God who is not distant or detached, but intimately involved in our lives—guiding, protecting, and providing for us like a shepherd cares for his sheep.

In biblical times, a shepherd's role was to lead, protect, and nurture the flock. Sheep are vulnerable creatures, easily lost and defenceless against predators. Without a shepherd, they would wander aimlessly, exposed to countless dangers. When David wrote Psalm 23, he was drawing from his own experience as a shepherd to describe the relationship between God and His people. God is our Shepherd, and we are His sheep—dependent on Him for direction, provision, and safety.

What does it mean for the Lord to be your shepherd?
It means you’re never alone in life’s journey. When you feel lost, He guides you. When you’re weary, He provides rest. When you walk through dark valleys, He is there to protect and comfort you. The Lord doesn’t just lead you to green pastures; He walks beside you through the rough terrain, too.

Life will have its challenges, but with the Lord as your shepherd, you can trust that your needs will be met—not always in the way you expect, but always in the way that’s best. When we truly believe “I shall not want,” we’re embracing the idea that God’s provision is enough. Even in times of scarcity or uncertainty, His presence brings peace, and His guidance brings hope.

So, whatever you’re facing today, take comfort in knowing that you are in the care of the Good Shepherd. He knows your name, understands your needs, and is leading you every step of the way.
