Welcome to the eighth song of this video series. "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream" is a song that bridges cultures and eras. Most people here in Sweden know it as Inatt Jag Drömde by Cornelis Vreeswijk, but Johnny Cash also recorded a version for his final album in the American Recordings series with Rick Rubin.
I grew up with the Swedish version of this song—my dad always played Cornelis Vreeswijk at home, so this song has a very special place in my heart. Hearing Cash’s version later in life gave it a whole new meaning for me.
Now, I also sing it to my daughters when we go to sleep—of course, in Swedish. It’s a way of keeping the legacy alive, and I hope they will remember it when they grow older, just like I remember my dad playing it.
I don’t usually get too political, but this song, at least to me, feels more important now than ever. With all the conflicts happening around the world—between Russia and Ukraine, Palestine and Israel, and many others—I just wish we could all live peacefully on this earth and learn to love each other's differences.
I wanted to create a mashup that honors both versions, keeping the lyrics in English but blending the folk influences from both artists. It’s a song about hope and peace, with a touch of melancholy that makes it timeless. I really hope this version brings out that message of hope while paying tribute to both legends.
