CHANNEL DIRECTION - Where my mind is at.

Thought we'd quickly do one of these again so that you can better understand where I'm at with my thought process and so that you can give me feedback in the comments if you think I'm misaligned with what you want to see. :)

I'm still in an experimentation phase, trying out a few different things, seeing what sticks. I'm especially looking for formats I can do somewhat time efficiently as I want to invest the majority of my time into actual game development, not YouTube.

THE PODCAST / INTERVIEWS

I really like doing the podcasts, because not only are they fairly efficient to make, but they also teach me new things. They feel like they contribute to my own growth as a developer.

There are some problems, though. At the current schedule (weekly) they consume pretty much all of the time I reserved for YouTube stuff. It's a lot of content and some of you have even said that you struggle to keep up.

I think the logical conclusion would be to relax the schedule a lot, or to take a little break and continue with season 2 at another time.

Just to clarify, I got 2 more (fantastic!) interviews recorded already and 2 more scheduled to be recorded soon. I think you're gonna like them so we'll finish this batch, then try out some new things.

I don't think stopping the podcast altogether is the correct call at this point but I also don't think it should continue with its current schedule. Some kind of middle ground compromise on this would probably make the most sense.

REVIEW GUESSER

I see some potential in this format. Can probably get a couple of good videos out of it.

I'm trying to get a public repository up so you can all try it out, hopefully some time this weekend.

I learned that there are already 2-3 people who made this exact game before me, though not in exactly the same way. My video has also already inspired somebody else to make a ReviewGuesser chrome plugin and published it "officially" before I did.

I think that's all cool. I never intended to turn it into a product or anything of the sorts. Just wanted to make a cool thing for myself and the community, so I don't mind if you run with the idea at all. Will open-source mine asap so you can take it as a starting point to mod in all of the features you want.

SLIDE / PRESENTATION FORMAT

The two slide / presentation style videos I made recently did way outperform all the rest. This tells me you want more of me just talking about game dev things in a condensed format.

I think that totally makes sense. I also really enjoy making these, just need to make more room in my schedule to actually make them. So once the podcast schedule relaxes, I'll use the newly available time from that for more presentation style vids. We got a lot to talk about!

DEVLOGS

Paul and I started work on the new game, but it's super early and we're not really ready to reveal anything, yet. Very much looking forward to your feedback and to sharing this new journey with you, though! Devlog series is starting once we lock in a clear direction and vision for the game and once I have enough content for a full devlog.

YOUR FEEDBACK

Your feedback is always welcome. Be mean to me if you want.

My only ask is to please be kind to the guests I invite. One day you might make a cool game and I'll invite you to sit there and chat. I'm not deleting comments or anything of the sorts, that's not how I roll. I will just remind you that guests do read comments and they are just people the same way you are.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts about overall direction. Wanna align as best as I can with what you want to see from me. Cheers!

@MH-dn3jz

First, I respect tf out of you prioritizing actual game dev instead of Youtube. Honestly a podcast every 2-3 weeks would be sufficient the information density is well worth it That said Your slide show concept videos. Dude. Those have blown my mind and are absurdly insightful.

Personally? I'm a huge fan of the presentation/slideshow style videos. If they take too much time or somethin' and you've got to drop them, I totally understand, but as long as you have the time and are enjoying them, I think they're great content, and I feel like I learn a lot from them! Figured I'd throw my two cents in the pool. I wish you the best of luck with further experimentation!

@Storypaintings

I personally really like the slide presentations as a game dev I learn a lot from those, and the podcasts are also great. Keep it up man I honestly appreciate everything you do with your content on YouTube.

@iAmGGlitch

i liked the slideshow videos bc they felt like a good upgrade of the devlogs i saw when first finding your channel, focusing on a topic and giving advice & reasoning, while also showing how it affected your gamedevving maybe im just remembering the old devlogs wrong and the rose tinted glasses just made things up, but thats the main distinction i found between the older & newer gamedev, and why the slideshows connected with me

Dude the design is a search algorithm video is one of the best things I've ever seen on game design. I don't think the format matters a ton when the content is that good. You clearly put a ton of thought and planning into that and it shows. Overall I think less is OK, because you put out super high quality stuff. Excited for what's next!

@askurdev

Really appreciate the slide videos as I struggle to fit podcasts into my schedule. Did you mention manking summary videos for the podcasts in a slide format in an earlier post? Because that would be super valuable to me 🙏

Super Hyped for the Devlogs, the Interviews always seem interesting but are so time consuming to watch

@ShadowCommander0

One interview every 2-3 weeks would probably be fine. I've been able to keep up with around 3/4s of the interviews at the current pace. They've got such good info in them because you both have completed games so the questions and answers feel more applicable than many other interviews I've listened to. Thank you for that! The slides videos are nice to check out when needed, but whether I watch them does kinda depend on if I'm at the point where they're useful.

Really enjoy the interviews. I think you’re doing a great job - you can really feel that you’re willing to learn from them yourself & are not doing it only for the sake of content.

I like all your content. Review guesser is very fun because we can analyze with you steam pages in a fast way. A steam guesser community Edition would be fun 😂

@r0flcopter

Would it be possible to see how you and Paul are thinking through and iterating through this early batch of prototypes? Seeing your design philosophy in practice would be the most helpful thing for us to see, rather than keeping everything theoretical

Your podcast is my favorite game dev content ever produced, I have found it to be endlessly insightful as I pursue indie dev. I want to see as much of it as possible, although I tend to really enjoy any content you put out

@ivya3260

I really enjoy the podcasts but I agree with your thoughts on slowing down the releases. They're full of useful insight & I love hearing different dev's journeys, plus you're a naturally gifted interviewer. You're my top pick for game dev interviews now. P.S. Thank you for interviewing women devs too! That was like a cherry on top since I rarely get to hear from women in this space. I've really enjoyed your presentation style videos & dev logs too. You make great content across the board and you're genuine and entertaining. But you're also an actual game developer, so don't feel pressured to hit any quotas with YouTube. I support whatever direction you want to take your channel honestly!

@pixeldevlog

Personally, i love the devlogs, I like the technical side more as I'm a developer. But ofc for a vast audience, it has to be on the entertainment side as well. Also love the interviews/podcasts for great value insights. In short all of your content is great, keep doing it !

I love the podcasts. You've beaten out Designer Notes as my top one. I learn something every time and you're naturally gifted at interviewing.

I love your podcast and slide videos, I think i learnt a lot. I dont watch your devlog. You make me want to make podcast by my own.
