The Next Layer

Greetings from Shenzhen, filafam!

TBH, I don't have much content I can share with you guys from China (yet). I've spent the majority of my trip so far encouraging (badgering) various 3D printer companies to do what's best for all of YOU.

This includes:
• Deeper support for OrcaSlicer, including printer management. We don't want proprietary slicers or forks!
• More and better profiles AT LAUNCH - Not 6 months later!
• Openly EMBRACING designers who are developing upgrades for their printers, from independent designers like ‪@nadir3D‬ to big companies like ‪@bigtreetech‬
• Adopt ONE, universal RFID standard for filament recognition!
• Making printers "future proof" in a way that empowers users to experiment with more advanced materials safely and successfully
• Moving beyond cheap, wasteful MMU systems and rushing to adopt new ideas like BondTech INDX.

In other words... I've got your backs!

Drop a comment below and let me know what else YOU want in 2026. I'll pass it along.

@nadir3D

Thanks for the tag, Jonathan 🙌 Totally agree — companies need to work with the community, not just around it. Open-source designers push boundaries that benefit everyone, and it’s awesome to see that message getting through. For 2026, I’d love to see: • Real collaboration between manufacturers and independent devs (design files, early access for testing, etc.) • Standardized electronics/toolboards that make upgrades and cross-compatibility easier • More focus on serviceability & longevity, not just speed benchmarks Keep spreading the word — this is exactly the direction we need 👌 see you soon brothe

Another one happy to see Nadir listed. As an SV08 owner his mods are pretty much my go to when I want something to work!

I am happy to see Nadir listed here as example. I allso found this guy on a youtube tutorial, and since then i allways download and print his neverending toolhead revisions, being happy to test and discover the speed and print quality benefits at each revision.

one thing i would really appreciate is if more companies could do like sovol and release full step files for their printers. doesnt have to include all parts in detail, block models are also great

The universal filament RFID and full Orcaslicer support are my #1 and #2.

I would love to see more multi tool changer printers. With bed and chamber heating that can print any filament with, little to no problems if possible. With easy step buy step assembly instructions. I feel that multi changing tool heads, is the future of 3d printing.

That pic means business. He looks like he about to fire someone. Thanks Jonathan for the good work.

100% on a universal RFID standard! I’d also like to see active chamber heating and nozzle temps up to 350°C in all printers over $1k. I understand the lower priced printers not including it.

Maybe ask them about using open source klipper more instead of forks and contribute back. Them make money from hardware not software 🤷🏽‍♀️ make the software collectively better so your hardware sells beter. Bambi lab won’t back down and they cant cut in to that market share if they keep going like thi

One thing that could perhaps be suggested to the companies is that they work with the user community to establish a beta test group that tests upcoming models under an NDA and reports back any problems.

The universal RFID would be amazing! We shouldn’t be “punished” for wanting to use any brand of filament we’d like. I love my AMS, but I hate that it can only sense when a roll of the same brand is used.

Universal RFID, spare parts availability in local retailers (including Amazon) less complicated disassembly and parts replacement, NO LOCKING OUT THIRD PARTY ACCESS TO BASIC PRINTER FUNCTIONALITY. If your slicer can do it all slicers should be allowed to do it. Third party devices and software should be allowed to add functionality.

Yeah we're totally tired of closed eco-systems. While some features might be useful, getting forced to be stuck on a specific brand for hardware really sucks. Also, like others have mentioned, getting full access to mainline klipper can only be an upside to the community, or even better, a configurable version of moonraker would be perfect. Imagine: switching from the simplicity of bambulab's version to mainline features with just one click! I guess it's probably easier done that said, to just hide the extra pages like the config one in the "base" setting and showing everything in the "advanced" one.

I would really like it if Companies use the Open source Klipper version and not a fork of it, which will not get any updates... Like Sovol did for the SV08 for example. Or if they decide to make a fork bring some value, as well as regular updates. Also if they decide to use a closed source software like BambuLab do, bring regular support and apply feedback from the community.
