I had a tape from a concert somewhere… during the Betts/Hayes line-up days… Dickey abruptly stops during a verse he’s singing and after gathering himself says “ I don’t know if you’ve ever had 20,000 volts across your fucking teeth but it tends to piss you off!” Funny the things you’ll remember about someone. But foremost, I’ll remember and continue to enjoy his beautiful music e.g., those incredible slow interludes in the early live versions of “Whipping Post” as well as his exquisite chording behind Duane post Berry’s solos in Mountain Jam… both can make me cry…

Rest in peace: the great Richard (Dickey) Betts, the cat in the hat, the ramblin’ man. Thank you for all the jams.
