Imam Tabari Refuting Isthigatha

"And when harm touches you at sea, lost are those you call upon except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away..." -Surah 17:67.

Iman Tabari (رحمه الله) says:
‎"You've lost those who you call upon besides Allah from the rivals (unto Him) and deities...-ولم تجدوا غير الله مغيثا يغيثكم دعوتموه -and you will not find besides Allah any helper who can help you when you call upon Him..."

Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, in his speech after the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had died, “Whoever used to worship Muhammad, Muhammad has died, but whoever used to worship Allaah, Allaah is Alive and will never die.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari).

You've got to be utterly foolish to believe that this is a refutation of Istighatha.

Um, akhi, this doesn't "refute" isthigatha. Those who perform isthigatha, believe help can only come from Allah already. They wouldn't disagree with Imam al Tabari RA. On the other hand, in another part of his Tafsir, Imam al-Tabari clearly refutes the Salafi belief that 'the mushriks of Mecca didnt take their idols as rabbs'.
