One of the things I love most about Studio Ghibli animation is the lighting, it's so consistently beautiful. In these shots we don't see the water, but the way the water shapes the light. This month for my Patreon Film Club we're discussing Spirited Away. You can see my notes on the film and join in the discussion here: www.patreon.com/posts/126436861

@LuisLopezVierma

What I love the most about Ghibli animation is how human and life-like it is. The details in the movement of the characters and the emphasis it puts on simple actions and minor mannerisms is so beautiful, it really makes the characters and the worlds feel so alive.

@florlax

I love how observant they are of the little things and gestures in real life and incorporate them in their characters. The way a child who grew up in Japan would have known to use a ribbon to tie her sleeves up, or the way a girl would slide open a shoji door if she thought ghosts would be behind it, or the way an old woman from a rural area would wash vegetables for children to eat. I don't know. It's so specific and so detailed. We see it through the animators' eyes, and it's always beautiful. Makes you long for things you've never lived through.

I was fortunate enough to see Spirited Away on the big screen this year. During the sequence where Chihiro is walking up to the bathhouse, and then meets Haku, you can SEE the light changing: moving unnaturally quick, and shifting between each background. Absolutely stunning.

Completely agree! My first experience watching Spirited Away was when it was aired one night on Cartoon Network when I was a wee lad. I remember it having a profound experience even at that age

Thomas, would you like to make a video about David Mamet book “ True and False: Heresy and Common Sense for the Actor”? I find this discussion intriguing, and I would love to know your analysis (As the long one you made on The Method)! 😊❤

I remember first watching Spirited Away in 2020 and it completely blew my mind of just how beautiful the animation was and how detailed everything was. Truly a beautiful film.

While I love the work and dedication behind it all. I just don’t like anime. I find it predictable in style and so much so that is does become the standard for people to “draw” in art school. It’s too much. Honestly, a single style has permeated through art, animation and design. It’s just kind of boring to me.
