This artefact, and the other objects in the hoard, were in pretty bad condition when they were found and have undergone extensive cleaning and restoration. The disc and the other objects now look absolutely stunning. But you can still see the damage done by the pickaxe used by the looters.
The Únětice metalworkers were absolute masters of their craft, making sturdy swords and daggers, and beautiful gold jewellery.
They had the skills and artistry to manufacture something like the sky disc.
One thing I wonder about is whether the disc was a one-off that just happened to be buried and discovered. Or whether there were many of them, perhaps with different variations. Or what other large bronze and gold objects were made, like this and the Trundholm sun chariot for example.
