For Harriet

Imagine saying this to a Harvard grad who studied under some of the foremost scholars of Black life, history, and culture (not to mention all the other classes and experiences I had in college that transformed how I see the world).

I really wish more people would just admit:
“I couldn't afford to study something simply because it excited me. Wealth inequality and the economy forced me to pick what the job market said was safe.”

We’d have a much healthier conversation about education in this country if we were more honest about how much fear drives the "useless degree" narrative. I understand that fear, but don't project that onto the Humanities Girlies who followed their curiosity and found purpose.

Last thing:

Black folks who use “affirmative action” as a slur are the weakest links. Affirmative Action built the Black middle class. Its rollback will decimate our collective progress.

I’ll admit…as a woman who graduated with a BA degree in Health Science, I do catch myself feeling an arrogance and even rolling at my eyes at my colleague who is studying anthropology. You are right. We select those areas because they feel safer and it does come from a place of scarcity/insecurity.

@CulinaryGuide

Also, what's implied in this person's comment is that the study of African American History under the tutelage of it's foremost scholars is not worth studying. As if our story and contributions to world history is inferior.

@sweetpeaon3

I have a socially acceptable degree. It gives me greater power to know that. Other people should be free to enjoy their degrees as much as I do, and everyone outside of school needs to pipe down because you don't even know the feeling of going through school and taking classes you DON'T care about just because you are there for that ONE THING YOU LOVE. I agree that there's a conversation to be had about access to education. I'm not cool with someone bullying a student for feeling like their reason to work hard and stay in school is to obtain a Humanities degree.

@Likeicare96

People love to 💩 on the humanities/social sciences, but when election season comes around and they’re citing their top concerns, it’s someone with that degree who has the knowledge to find solutions. Trade and wealth inequality - Economics, history, AA studies, poli sci, Job market sucks, employers are horrible - labour studies, economics War & other geopolitical issues - history, development studies, poli sci Immigration- various cultural specific studies (especially LAS studies for the US), history, anthropology Why are people scared of vaccines and the wider medical system - sociology, anthropology, communications Why aren’t people having kids- sociology, anthropology, GENDER & FEMINIST STUDIES, religious study The mess of social media and people literally living in diff worlds/truths - digital studies, language, communications, etc And that’s not even to get into the fine arts and people complaining that we don’t make good media anymore every other day. I could go on but you get the picture. These issues are obviously important to people, but for some reason, the second people try to study the mechanisms and solutions…. It’s a useless degre

it’s further crazy because you have an ENTIRE business based on said degree lmfao, like you literally did The Thing one is “suppose to do” with their college education; profit from it.

People love to project negativity at you when you do something that they wish they had the courage to do. Being able to choose your major, as your passion, is a dream too many defer. You win. They lose 😎🌻

As a black woman who has degrees in Cultural Studies with a Black World Studies and Pan-African Studies with a focus on Women and Gender Studies from 2008-2010 and my passions have not turned to profit, YET! But it will very soon! I love this channel! It's refreshing to see other black women having these juicy intellectually stimulating conversations! 😁

@BigChanges

I used to openly share that I wished I had approached college differently. But as I’ve watched the “degrees are useless” narrative grow, I’ve started redirecting those conversations to highlight the inherent value of further education — something I had assumed most college grads already understood. As someone with a STEM degree, it's annoying when other STEM majors dismiss non-STEM degrees. Many people are deeply specialized but underexposed to fields outside our own, especially in the humanities and social sciences. That lack of broader understanding is really astonishing, like how have you worked in environmental remediation for years but have never heard of environmental racism.

@AdoseofAlana_

As a Sociology degree holder, I am also sick of that narrative! My outlook on the world would be so jaded if I hadn't studied sociology. I was living in my cute slightly sheltered suburban bubble with married parents: a mom who's a teacher and a dad who was a Navy Senior chief. My life was so good I didn't fully realize how blessed and privileged i was. I often thought my life was so normal but my other black friends were not as fortunate nor were so many others.
