My backpack gets too heavy so I prefer a duffle with luggage handle sleeve to put on my carryon luggage.

My carry-on is usually a backpack, so my personal item usually isn't. (But sometimes it is and I just carry it by the top handle while I'm wearing the big backpack.)

Carry on backpack and a tote bag personal Just shove my cross body sling into the tote bag with a hoodie and snacks in there. Done deal. Got it all

My ideal bag would be a cross body duffle satchel or messenger bag ... Not fond of slings.

My carryon also converts into a backpack; so a personal messenger bag lets me wear both, should the need arise.

Pretty much a coin flip between backpack and sling for me. I don’t do a lot of traveling so smaller bags for edc get a lot more use.
