All the time... I see them as saving a huge amount on labor. I use both chainsaws and sawzalls to cut roots on stumps or while hand trenching. Blades and chains are cheap.

I try to protect the chain as much as possible but they will get damaged minor to severe. Some things are unavoidable in normal use. I severely damaged a very new chain hitting a large piece of hard metal in a neighborhood tree. It was completely encased in wood with no obvious sign that it was there. Sometimes you want to use a worn down chain as opposed to a brand new chain if your suspicious of what you're cutting. But beware. You can actually break a worn down tooth off of a chain if you sit hit something really hard. If you are doing a serious logging operation with neighborhood trees, a metal detector is a very worthwhile investment.
