The Impatient Gardener

I'm getting a lot of garden questions sent to me, so I thought it would be a great time for a Q&A video. Leave your questions here for an upcoming video!

Your channel is my favorite gardening channel! What is your day job and what have been some challenges with balancing it with your YouTube channel over the years?

Hi Erin! Can’t wait for the Q&A, it’s always fun🤩 I have a few questions: how do you overwinter coffee cups Colocasia? And I think You’ve also successfully divided it year after, what’s your tip on that? I’ve killed mine 2 times already trying to overwinter the corms in vermiculite (dahlia method). Do you save your caladium corns as well? If so, how do you store them? Few years back you’ve grown asarina in your window boxes, how was the flowering? Apart from purple bell Vine 💜 what would be your top annual climber? And finally, what’s your diet? You look amazing!

Yay! I have two questions. What plants would you recommend for spots that get blasted with hot late day sun, but spend most of the day in shade? In ground and planter ideas both helpful. Do you have any suggestions for tall narrow plants to add height to areas that are skinny? I’m zone 4/5 urban garden and skinny tall plants are a big need. Have a great day Erin.

Hi Erin, which is your favourite perennial in your garden? Also have you ever grown heirloom varieties of vegetables and which would you recommend? Love your channel!

@billyjobobb

How do you avoid the garden getting stale? I’ve lost some joy and it’s kinda feeling like doing chores when I get outside.

Does being a gardening “influencer” change anything about how you garden? If so, how does it impact your choices. Also, what does Mr. Much-More-Patient think about your gardening fame?

Are there any flower seedlings that you plant outside before last frost? If so, what are they, and how long before your last frost date?

@SarahB8428

How do you know when to start fertilizing seedlings? Some resources I’ve found indicate to start based on height, others based on number of true leaves. Thanks so much!

Excellent early spring show. A good question is about the fritallaria diseases. Mine starts out then bends at the stem. Collapsing and dying. Love the big black furry plant pointer

Non gardening question: What is your favorite gin cocktail? Have you tried Monkey 47 Schwarzwald dry gin? It makes a very elevated Last Word or Negroni. Gardening question: is there a plant, tree, or shrub that you think is totally overdone and would never select for your garden?

Yay! I love question and answer time. I'm very interested in how your hose link solar path lights by the steps you put in by the creek are doing? I'm tempted to pull the trigger but they're a little pricey, so I'd love to see how they're doing after a few years out in the garden. Do you pull them in for winter time?

Should "Weird Al" Yankovic be allowed in the rock and roll hall of fame? And what are your favorite gardening shoes?

I’m in Michigan, can you recommend understory evergreen trees and shrubs. I have 30-40 ft trees along the back of my property and want something besides boxwood. Not having luck with azaleas or rhododendron. Thanks 😊

I’m doing seeds for the first time and mostly successes. Failures are Hollyhocks. They either never appear or die right after emerging.

What are your favourite perennials to propagate via cuttings? Love your channel and hello from Newfoundland!

You mentioned heaving in the garden stroll video. I think I have foam flower that has done that. Do I just dig a deeper hole to fix it? What can I do to prevent root/plant heaving?

How do you make growing food more manageable? My family doesn't help grow. Just me. I find I'm too busy to really get a good yield. But I love eating my own produce and vegetables and being healthy. How can I show my family it's important and fun?

What is your opinion on leaving spring clean up for late as possible for the bugs? I like to clean up as the weather permits from early spring to late spring.
