As a child in the 1950s. Our family slept in bunk beds at night on the train. They had a dining car that was like a nice restaurant. It had tables with white table cloths.

I rode a train across Australia twice (E to W, then back again) in 1975. It was a 3 day trip. Had my 8th birthday on that trip, and the chef baked me a cake. We had sleeper cars and ate in the dining room. What an adventure!

Many times...almost all of the Amtrak routes in a sleeper, The Canadian in both directions, Vienna to Zurich via the Arlburg pass in the Alps, Wolfsburg, DE to Orleans, FR and back a few times (I'll be doing that one again in a few weeks). Loved them all.

San Francisco [Emeryville] to Los Angeles on the coast starlight, transferred to surf liner to get to San Juan Capistrano. I did like the train ride, though, passed through a lot of beautiful country.

In the mid 1980s, my brother and I took trains within India. Some of which we had a seat, some of which we were in a baggage compartment and some of which we were on the floor. In your 20s it's a blast.

The longest train ride I took was from Amsterdam to Berlin just after the wall came down. It was a very slow train ride when we entered the DDR on route to Berlin, it was a trip I will never forget. So many changes and yet it was still a bit scary because the East German border guards still entered the train and were trying to look very authoritarian, yet much of their power had disappeared. But I will never forget seeing all the differences between the west and the east as we travelled through.

From NC to Washington, wasn't supposed to be 11 hours but if anyone has used Amtrak, you know. Miss the euro rail system, clean, on time, affordable.

I was on vacation when 9/11 happened...I was at my dad's house in Ohio when it happened and all planes were grounded. I spent 6 hours on hold with Amtrak as I watched the coverage on tv...I got a ticket to New York Penn Station and then a sleeper from there to Orlando, Fla ( they said it was the last sleeper left on that train). I got to spend 6 hours between trains in New York City a couple days after 9/11. (When I started my vacation, my air connection was in NYC and I saw the towers as we descended to land at JFK). Amtrak, in subsequent financial cuts, stopped having a stop in Canton, Ohio where I started my train journey back in 2001.
